discharging a public duty, I do not consider that on this account I have any claim upon the public, and I trust therefore that I may not appear ungrateful, or that I may not hurt the susceptibilities of my friends, if I do not avail myself of their most generous proposal to defray the cost of the recent legal proceedings. With my despatch No. 399 I also transmitted copy of a letter from Mr Price to the Colonial Secretary in which he thought himself absolved by the Chief Justice from all imputation, "proposes, on behalf of his Department, the appointment of a commission "of Inquiry."

Enclosure (Govt. Notien. No. 418 of 1883), I annex a copy of the Commission which has been issued; and with the advice of the Executive Council, I have appointed to be members of it.
